Third International Workshop on Scientific Computing and Applications
January 6-9, 2003
City University of Hong Kong
The Third International Workshop on Scientific Computing and
Applications will continue the tradition of the highly successful
workshops held at the City University of Hong Kong in December 1998
and Banff, Alberta, Canada in May 2000. The aim is to bring together
mathematicians, scientists and engineers working in the field of
scientific computing and its applications to solve scientific and
industrially oriented problems and to provide a forum for the
participants to meet and exchange ideas of common interest in an
informal atmosphere. The goal of the workshop will be twofold. On one
hand it will focus on the fundamental methods and algorithms for
solving PDE's and linear systems of equations. On the other hand, it
will try to attract the attention of the industrial community to
present and discuss the applications of scientific computing in
practical problems. The applications may be focused on numerical
simulations in the oil and chemical industries, aerodynamics and
environmental studies.
Conference Proceeding:
A conference proceeding will be published by
Nova Science Publishers, Inc. It will be a volume in the book

Participants:
A list of the participants is available here.
Location:
The workshop will take place in the City Univerisity of Hong Kong.
Hong Kong (www.info.gov.hk,
www.hkta.org) is a modern
metropolis influenced by both oriental and western cultures and home
to over 6 million people. The native tongue of most residents is
Cantonese, but English and Mandarin speakers can get around
easily. The local currency has an approximate exchange rate of HK$7.8
to US$1.
Call for Papers:
If you wish to present a paper in this workshop, please submit an abstract
by e-mail to sca03@math.cityu.edu.hk by September 30, 2002. A LaTeX file for the abstract is preferred
and it should not exceed one page.
Registration:
All participants in the conference must register. The registration fee is
US$170/HK$1326, but those who register by September 30, 2002 need only pay
US$150/HK$1170. All full-time students may register for half price.
The registration fee
includes conference materials, tea breaks and a Chinese
banquet. To register, please complete and
mail/fax us the attached registration form
(MS word,
PDF).
Accommodation:
We have arranged two hotels for conference participants to choose
from. The special rate for the Royal Plaza Hotel (a 5-star
hotel) is HK$550 per room daily and it is guaranteed on or before
Nov 29, 2002. Please use this reservation form.
The rate for Anne Black
Guest House (YWCA) is now HK$374 per day. You should
confirm booking by December 15, 2002. Here is the
new reservation form (MS word,
PDF).
Proceedings:
The Organizing Committee plans to publish the proceedings of the workshop.
Detailed information will be provided later.
Transportation:
Visitors to Hong Kong from some countries require visas.
If you are in doubt, please contact the Chinese Consulate nearest you.
Some conference participants may wish to visit the Chinese Mainland
before or after the conference. All foreigners visiting the
Mainland require a visa, which may be obtained from the Chinese
Consulate. However, for short trips to the Mainland you may obtain a
tourist visa in Hong Kong within a matter of a few days.
Hong Kong has an excellent public transportation system consisting
of trains, buses and taxis. Generally, frequency of service is every
few minutes. The City University of Hong Kong is a short walk from the
Kowloon Tong underground subway (MTR) and railway (KCR) interchange.
